The two stories in Philippine Diaspora were entitled “Turban Legend” by R Zamora Linmark and “Waiting” by Ron Darvin. This two story focused about the struggles on complicated life of every Overseas Filipino Workers for the sake of money and better future for their family. But why did they refuse to live in their own country and they rather choose to live as slave in another country?
The story of Turban Legend can trace the reason behind balik bayan boxes that remind us for having our colonial mentality. This is the cancerous disease of every Filipinos which until now we still don’t have any cure for it said by our hero writer named Jose Rizal. The symptoms are getting severe and it’s obvious now a day’s.
Capitalist causes a total blindness to our countrymen who still believing in Neoliberalism that we are weak, we are their little brown brothers who need a support and guidance to our older white brothers (Americans). For being a semi-feudal and semi-colonial country, our very rich and fertile land is very perfect spot for the Imperialist country like US and other European countries. Tied up with our backward systems and makes no choice but to sell our country men in other countries to survive without thinking the possibilities after.
The very touching story entitled “Waiting” intensifies the cancer mentality of Filipino workers and even professionals who have a degree to risk their present life for their future in a foreign country. The sad reality that there’s a number of people swallow their pride and let the getting serious brain drain problem in their own country in believing that progress are impossible in the Philippines so they choose to fight for their future in other country by surrendering their self in foreign slavery. But we can’t blame them because of the oppression of our bureaucrats in our “Elite Democracy” and these people are tired to patronize these elites so they choose those kind of decisions like Ma’am Isabel does.
Everything is political in any sense but in the story we can’t deny the fact that in our country abusing this kind of power is part of our norms where our parents to grandparents up to our ancestors are widely accepted because like what they say the system already own and control us. The unjust salary for Filipino laborers, the unsolved traffic over a century, the ideology of colonial mentality to make us believe that we’re inferior and they are the superior so let’s follow their track and let them guide us because we’re weak and morons. All of this is the effect of their evil plans to put our country in a developmental paralysis.
This kind of literary materials feed our souls more than our intellect. We can locate the differences and conflicts in our country reading this such writings and using the different lenses. I’m Matthew Arabit reminding you to look what you consume, because what you consume is what you are.
Kalian kaya tayo matututo?
